I must confess, 5 years of working in the beauty industry has made a skincare enthusiast of me! As a beauty advisor, I eagerly attended many training seminars where I was taught the science behind the newest skincare products, and I tried and tested hundreds of them on my own skin: anti-wrinkle, skin lightening, anti acne, hydrating, brightening, anti-redness, the list goes on! Because of my own curiosity, I'm not sure I'll ever have the same skincare product line routine for long; I love trying new products too much! There have, however, been some products that have captured my heart and have made it on to my "old faithfuls" list.
I have a 'normal-combination' skin type. At times, prone to dehydration on the cheeks, and at times prone to small hormonal breakouts. During seasonal changes (subzero temps in the winter/falling temps in the fall) my skin goes through periods of dryness. The skin care products below have helped me balance and repair my skin over the years. Many aren't the newest products on the shelves, but they've been very effective on my skin and I'll always remain faithful to them.
Do you have any "old faithful" skincare products that you've taken to?
Clairisonic Mia 2- For those of you not familiar with Clairisonic's sonic facial cleansing tools, think: Sonicare toothbrush technology (no really, these were launched by the same company that makes Sonicare toothbrushes). The sonic frequency moves the soft, gentle facial brush back and forth at more than 300 times per second, thoroughly clearing pores and skin's surface and producing enough power to remove 30 times more age-accelerating pollutants than manual cleansing (wowie!). The tool claims to remove makeup six times better than traditional methods, clear pores and reduce the appearance of pore size, cleanse so thoroughly that skincare products absorb better, and create noticeably healthier looking skin.
I found that upon immediate use, my skin certainly felt cleaner, but that it also helped my skin products (serum, moisturizer) absorb better. I love that I can use it with any cleanser I wish, and I like that it has two settings (low and high), so if I have a breakout or skin sensitivity, I can use it on low, but when I want a bit more cleansing action to remove leftover impurity marks, I can set it on high (tip: the best way to use it is to let it glide over the skin, you do not need to apply much pressure). After about a month of using it, I realized this would stay with me forever. It has done wonders for smoothing out my skin and reducing breakouts (and I like to think it's also doing wonders for preventing those pesky age lines down the road!) It's an investment piece for sure, but in my experience its worth every penny (or knickle...is that what we say now with the Canadian penny being extinct?!)
Clinique Moisture Surge Intense Skin Fortifying Hydrator- also known as "band-aid in a jar", "my savior", "cream of the gods", etc. Has your skin ever freaked out at the sub-zero temperatures we are exposed to here in Canada and gotten so dry that your smile cracks off of your face? Yes, me too. Don't worry, just run to your local drug or department store and pick up a little jar of this miracle cream. It instantly rehydrates and plumps your skin, and continues to for the following 24 hours. It is fragrance free and excellent for sensitive skin. I prefer to lather this on at night time, so I wake up with repaired skin for the morning. Tip: If you're going to apply it in the morning, give it some time to absorb before applying makeup as it stays tacky for longer than your usual moisturizer!
Estee Lauder Advanced Night Repair- I'm pretty sure this serum has been on women's "old faithfuls" lists since before I knew what skin cream was. Basically you apply a drop to your face and neck area at night before your moisturizer, and you wake up looking like a dewy skinned 20 year old. Okay, slight exaggeration, but this serum renews your skin overnight and in the morning you are left with skin that is more plump, hydrated, healthier, stronger, and more rested. My favorite trait is that ANY skintype can use it. it's oil free, fragrance free, and non-acnegenic. I've been using it for 4 years, its gotten me through numerous rough university paper all nighters, and for that I'm rewarding it a spot on my "old faithfuls".
